In keeping with a tradition established over the years the Nissan Sugarbelt 400 on May 15 and 16, round three of the Absa Off Road Championship, will be a spectator friendly event.
Based once again at the Beaumont Eston Farmers Club the race is run through the lush and rolling hills of Kwa-Zulu Natal’s sugarcane. The twisty and undulating cane tracks are tricky and always catch out the unwary, with the Nissan Sugarbelt earning a reputation as one of the toughest races on the Absa calendar.
“There is a superb mix of terrain and spectators will be served up all sorts of varied viewpoints,” said clerk of the course Rex Boreham from the Natal Off Road Motor Club. “These range from narrow cane breaks on the edge of hillsides to fast and undulating roller coasters within easy sight of main tar roads.”
The race will again be run in a figure of eight format with an east loop and a west loop that national competitors will complete twice. There are nine excellent viewpoints on the east loop, which will be run first, and eight on the west loop.
“There are spectator points common to both loops,” said Boreham. “Team service crew and members of the public will also be able to watch the action where the route runs close to the Beaumont Eston Farmers Club and the start/finish and designated service point.
Boreham added that the organisers had produced a detailed map with directions to individual spectator points. The spectator points are all within a radius of 30 kilometres from the Eston Club, and with forward planning enthusiasts can enjoy a day of non stop action.
The spectator guide can be downloaded from www.saofroadracing.co.za and will also be available at the Beaumont Eston Farmers Club. The Friday, 15 May prologue to determine start positions will start at 13h00 and the race proper on the Saturday, 16 May will get underway at 08h00.
