Spears in the Currie Cup, for now

The somewhat controversial Currie Cup format for this year was given the green light by the Board of SA Rugby after their meeting in Cape Town.

The Southern Spears are expected to participate as a franchise team, comprising players from the Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts.

However, there is a possibility the franchise may decide to challenge for a top eight Currie Cup position as individual teams, but that decision is in the hands of the three unions, who will meet on Saturday to discuss the various options.

The Board further announced they would be taking steps to rectify the shortcomings of the five Super 14 sides, calling their performances so far, "far below expectation".
