The Spears

The future of the Southern Spears as a Super 14 rugby team will be decided on Friday. The readiness of the Southern Spears franchise to participate in next year's Super 14 competition was discussed at length during a Board meeting of SA Rugby in Cape Town today.
Submissions from the recent SA Rugby fact finding mission was considered as well as presentations by the Spears franchise and other stake holders. After lengthy deliberations it was decided not to announce a decision before receiving further input from the presidents of all the provincial unions. Chairman of the Board Mpumelelo Tshume said SA Rugby is not dragging the matter out nor will it make hasty decisions. He said it's important to emerge with a decision that takes into account the total picture of the South African rugby environment. The presidents council will meet on Thursday to discuss the matter further and a final decision will be announced on Friday.
